ASBURY PARTNERS PLANS SECOND ANNUAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH FILM FESTIVAL: Poster Contest to Feature Works of City's Schoolchildren
Asbury Partners, master developer of Oceanfront Asbury, the 56-acre waterfront redevelopment in Asbury Park, New Jersey, will present the second annual Black History Month Film Festival in February. The film festival will be held on the boardwalk at Paramount Theatre on two consecutive weekends, featuring a variety of contemporary and historical films. Showings for the general public will take place on Friday, February 11, at 7 p.m.; on Saturday, February 12, at 1, 4 and 8 p.m.; on Friday, February 18, at 7 p.m.; and on Saturday, February 19, at 1:30, 4 and 8 p.m.
In addition, Middle School and High School groups are invited to special free showings on the two Fridays of the festival at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. For movie information and to reserve seats, educators can call (732) 774-1143.
Tickets will be $3 for children and $5 for adults, with group discounts available. For a list of movies and their ratings, or more information, please call Caitlin Thorn at 732-774-1143 or email crthorn@conventionhall.net.
This year's event will also include a poster contest sponsored by Asbury Partners for local schoolchildren, with a total of $1,000 in U.S. savings bonds and a $500 college book scholarship to be presented to the winners.
During the film festival, posters will be displayed at Convention Hall, which is located adjacent to Paramount Theatre. The posters will highlight the history of African Americans and their contributions in Asbury Park.
"We determined that our theme will be African American History Month - Asbury Park: Honoring our Past, Present and Future," said Sharon Harris, supervisor of the performing arts, fine arts, music and ESL for Asbury Park Schools.
An official judging panel will select the winners in three age groups: Elementary School, Middle School and High School. Asbury Partners will host a private reception for participating students, their families and school faculty prior to the 1:30 p.m. show on February 19, at which time the winners will be recognized.
"We are pleased to present the second annual Black History Month Film Festival, which was well-received during its debut last year," said Larry Fishman, chief operating officer of Asbury Partners. "Our goal is to foster appreciation of African-American contributions to the film industry while providing great entertainment for area residents. This year, we also are pleased to showcase the talents of Asbury Park's youth."
